How Everything On The Internet Became Click Bait
How did clickbait become the preferred format for online media? NYU PhD candidate Kevin Munger explores this question and writes, “the things that suck about modern media are by no means new. It’s just that the internet has put all of them in one place.”
Munger argues that the problem is that media is catering to stupid soundbites of stories that we all know are unimportant (like the “Yanni and Laurel debate”) and yet none of us wants to feel left out of. So our media diets are based on our fear of missing out (FOMO).
What’s the solution? Perhaps the same as curing your real life FOMO ... find the confidence to be your own person instead of following the crowd.

A Short Backstory Of This Blog
This is a blog about non-obvious ideas. Originally launched on the Typepad platform in 2005 as the Influential Marketing blog, the stories at first focused mainly on digital marketing while Rohit worked at Ogilvy Advertising. In 2015 Rohit officially rebranded to the Non-Obvious Insights Blog and published his WSJ bestseller Non-Obvious. For the past twenty one years, this blog has coined new terms, introduced future marketing practices and inspired the next generation of non-obvious thinkers and marketers.
