Academy Tries To Finally Kill The #OscarsSoWhite Hashtag
For two years running the Oscars have had an embarrassing lack of diversity in their finalist announcements. While the organization behind the awards was vilified for the lack of inclusion, there was only so much it could do. After all, the finalists are announced based on the combined votes of hundreds of Academy members.
So the Academy went at the problem from the other end and announced a new class of members, a full 41% of whom are people of color. Change the voters and, eventually, you change the votes.
Now we just need to wait until next February to see if the move has the intended effect.
