Richard Branson's Next Big Idea: Sports Festivals

Richard Branson promoting a Virgin Sport festival

Most participatory sporting events, marathons in particular, are catered to the individual rather than to families. Richard Branson wants to change that.

The business world's ambassador of fun wants to bring back the family sports festival, and he is launching Virgin Sport to do it, starting with a UK based event. On the surface it looks like a small tweak to a format that already works. Underneath, it is a bet that the people standing on the sidelines of a race are a market of their own, and not just spectators waiting for someone else to finish.

The wide ranging interview where he laid out the idea was worth reading for another reason too. It offers some useful insight into how Branson gets his business ideas in the first place, which is a question far more people ask about him than about any single one of his companies.
