The Dark Future Of Digital Neighborhood Watch Tools
What if your smart doorbell and apps could automatically track “suspicious” behavior and alert the authorities? This is one of the promises of an app called Neighbors, released by smart doorbell company Ring, which was recently acquired by Amazon.
It is worth asking whether all of this Amazon-controlled surveillance of our neighborhoods is really a good thing. With Echo, Amazon is always listening. This new app takes it one step further, and so the question has already become even more urgent to ask: how much action do we really want Amazon, or any other tech company, to be able to take on our behalf without our intervention?
